Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a piano or keyboard to start lessons?

Yes, having the ability to practice daily is a crucial aspect of learning piano. I do not suggest going out and buying the most expensive piano to get started, but there are a few key things you need to have. The piano or keyboard needs to have 88 weighted keys. The weighted aspect is very important, they need to have the ability from the beginning to play loud and soft with pressing either firm or light on the keys. They also need to have at least the damper pedal, but having all three pedals is ideal. When you are ready to invest into a lifetime piano or keyboard, I am happy to walk you through the process of finding the right one for you!

Do I need to practice daily?

The short answer for this is yes. The more you practice the quicker you see progress. I know life is busy, so my longer answer is a minimum of 5 days a week is sufficient, although 7 days a week is ideal. Keep in mind you only come to lessons on average for 30 minutes one day a week. Consistency and detailed practice are key to successfully learning piano. I like to tell my students to find a time in the day and make that their dedicated practice time. Once you make it a habit you will be more likely to consistently practice.

What are some benefits of learning piano?

This is a very important question to ask. At its most basic level piano provides enjoyment, relaxation, self-confidence, encourages creativity, and teaches perseverance. On a deeper level piano has been said to fire ignitors in all parts of the brain. All at once you’re working your brain, eyes, spatial awareness, feet if you’re pedaling, and very few instruments require the use of all 10 fingers! Playing piano has been proven to lessen depression and anxiety and reduce stress. Playing piano is an amazing way to stretch your memory as well as shockingly your communication skills. On a scholastic level piano has been compared to helping improve problem-solving, listening, communicating, and hand-eye coordination. There is much research on the whole-body benefits of playing piano, but these are just a few for you to think about if you’re considering learning the amazing instrument – the piano!

This is truly a wonderful studio! Both Bridgette and Avery are fantastic-they are extremely organized and communicate well, which I have found is hard to find among musicians and has been a frustration of mine in the past with others. Not to mention they are both so very patient and kind with my boys. They have learned an incredible amount since starting here and I’m so excited to continue to see them learn and grow. You all are the best! Thank you for making piano a positive experience for my two boys!

If you’re looking to pair your child or family member with a piano teacher who will love and motivate every bit as much as (s)he will coach and instruct, then you can’t find a better studio! I have known the people at Finley Piano Studio for years and I have recommended them again and again to students all over Kentucky. They are the best! Nobody will work harder for your student!

We love Miss Bridgette! She is so good with little ones (and I’m sure bigger ones too)! My daughter really enjoys every lesson and I love seeing her progress as she learns new skills. The studio itself is also gorgeous and my daughter loves the little “cave” to pick out prizes. We drive an hour one-way to get here and it is so worth it. I also love that if we can’t make the drive for some reason, Miss Bridgette is always willing to do lessons online. Such a great studio. Highly recommend!

We are so grateful for all your time and effort introducing and teaching our children the beauty of piano and music. It is such a gift to hear them play and be able to pick up learning other instruments because they have the foundation you have afforded them.
